Most Black Friday Buyers Never Come Back. Here's How Family Brands Keep Them.

Over half of holiday shoppers stick with brands they already know. How to turn BFCM customers into loyal repeat buyers.

Every Black Friday, family brands spend heavily to win new customers. Ad costs peak, discounts go out, and orders come in. Then January arrives, and most of those customers are never seen again.

That's a missed opportunity. Optimove's 2026 Holiday Shopping Report found that 53% of shoppers plan to buy only from stores they shopped at last year. In other words, the customers you win this November could be your easiest sales next holiday season and all year in between.

But only if you give them a reason to stay. Here's how.

1. Send a real thank-you

Post-Purchase

Within a few days of a purchase, send a warm thank-you email with no discount and no sales pitch. Just appreciation, and maybe a note about who you are and why you started.

Most brands only email when they want to sell something. A genuine thank-you makes you memorable.

2. Help them get the most out of what they bought

Customer Success

A customer who loves their purchase is far more likely to buy again. Follow up with content that helps them use it:

This is especially important for gifts. The person who received the product may become your next customer.

  • Care and cleaning tips
  • How-to videos or quick guides
  • "What parents love about this" stories from other customers

3. Follow the child's stage

Lifecycle Marketing

Family products have a built-in advantage: kids grow. A baby who needed newborn swaddles will need toddler pajamas. A kid who loves the beginner kit will be ready for the next level.

Use what you know (the child's age, sizes purchased, products bought) to suggest the natural next step at the right time. That isn't pushy selling. It's being helpful to a family you already know.

4. Ask for a review at the right time

Social Proof

Don't ask for a review the day the package arrives. Wait until the product has actually been used, usually two to four weeks after delivery. Then ask, and make it easy.

Reviews from holiday buyers are valuable. They give future shoppers social proof, and they give you insight into what families love most.

5. Send fewer, better emails

Email Strategy

By November, most shoppers are worn out. The same Optimove report found that more than seven in ten consumers say they're tired of holiday marketing messages by then.

So after the holidays, don't keep blasting your new customers with sale emails. Send fewer, more relevant messages based on what they bought and what they might need next. Relevance keeps people subscribed. Volume makes them leave.

6. Set up a win-back flow

Automations

Some customers will drift away, and that's normal. A win-back flow automatically reaches out when someone hasn't purchased in 60-90 days. Keep it personal: "We miss you," a look at what's new, or a reason to come back. Many brands find that this flow quietly brings back a meaningful share of lapsed customers.

The bottom line

Acquisition gets the headlines in Q4. Retention is what makes it profitable. The cost of winning a customer during Black Friday is high, but if that customer buys again in spring, summer, and the next holiday season, the math changes completely.
